Since meeting the young women entrepreneurs from Ephtah, led by Wubit Bekele, at World of Coffee Athens 2023, we have cherished every sample they shared with us. We are now excited to introduce another exceptional Ethiopian lot.
Ethiopia has a rich history with Arabica coffee, stretching back hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Originally, coffee was likely consumed from wild beans growing in the forests. Traditionally, roasted coffee beans were mixed with oils and fats to create a food called "Buna Qala," still enjoyed today in regions like Oromia and Sidamo, often before or during traditional blessings.
Ethiopian coffee production is profoundly influenced by the country's three main seasons. The Bega season (October-January) is the long dry period, crucial for coffee harvesting and processing. The Belg season (February-May) brings the first rains, essential for coffee flowering and early fruit development. The Krempt season (June-September) sees heavy rainstorms from the east, critical for the later stages of coffee fruit development and ripening. By the end of September, the rains cease abruptly, allowing the coffee fruits to ripen, culminating in a bustling harvest period by November.
