Situated amongst the Aberdare Mountain foothills in the Muranga county are a small collection of 5 factories run by the Kangiri Farmers Cooperative Society. 2019 saw a few leadership issues arise out of what had always been a respected group and despite a few containers being blocked, concerns raised have been focussed on and a return to the expected quality maintained.
Coffee growers here mainly consist of smallholder farmers, around 635 of them, producing cherry from an average half-acre plot each and
delivering it to the nearest factory for sorting and quality control. Cherries are washed, soaked, and dried for around two weeks on raised beds,
before being sorted for both cup profile and bean size.
