Description

Gelana Abaya is one of the well known areas for great Yirgachefe. Tore is a washing station in the kabele Tore in Gelana Abaya, Galana, Yirgacheffe. This washing station owned by the married couple Gizaw and Frehiwot Mekonnen. They have invested in improved processing and drying to increase their qualities the last few years. They have a program to separate the production of really high qualities from the general production. Gizaw Alemayu and the site manager Sultan Jemal work with 300 farmers in Gelana that deliver to the washing station. The average farm size is 0.75 hectares, and has a sandy loom soil. Most coffees are organic by default. Organic compost is common, pruning less common. A farmer can typically have less than 1500 trees per hectare, and 1 tree is typically producing cherries equal to less than 100 – 200 grams of green coffee.A mix of local improved varieties such as native coffee of forest origin transferred to family smallholder plots. The varieties are referred to collectively as Ethiopian Heirloom, which is a myriad of local native Typica hybrids and new improved varieties based on the old strains.
