Women’s hands Cyendajuru is a group of women farmers who have their own farm and combine their harvests for the Simbi Washing Station. They represent 50 hectares of coffee-growing area. The washing station provides fertilizers and small loans to the group. The proximity of the farms allows the cherries to be processed and delivered to the washing station in just one hour.
Simbi is a privately owned station operated by Abdul Rudahunga, who was inspired to enter the coffee business by his grandmother - one of the few rural Rwandans who roasted and enjoyed her own coffee as part of her daily routine. The station was built between 2011 and 2012, with its first season in 2013, employing 85 people, 80% of whom were women.
Despite the tragedy of the 1994 genocide and civil war, Rwanda remains a beautiful and culturally rich country that produces exceptional coffee. Since those difficult times, coffee has brought hope and economic opportunity, and Rwanda is now recognized as a leading producer of specialty coffee. The country benefits from ideal growing conditions, including high altitudes, consistent rainfall, fertile volcanic soils, and abundant Bourbon coffee trees. The vast majority of Rwandan coffee is produced by smallholders who cultivate plots often no larger than one hectare per family.
